The recent case emerging from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh has reignited discussions around the contentious issue of ‘Love Jihad.’ A young woman belonging to the Dalit community has found herself at the center of a controversy involving allegations of religious conversion and maltreatment. The victim’s father has accused a man named Shoaib of coercing his daughter into converting her faith, alongside disturbing claims of force-feeding beef and sexual abuse.

This distressing incident brings to the fore several critical issues concerning religious freedoms, women’s rights, and interfaith relationships. The allegations of forced conversion raise concerns about the practice of ‘Love Jihad,’ a term often used to describe purported campaigns where individuals, particularly Muslim men, are accused of enticing Hindu women into relationships to convert them to Islam.

According to media reports, this case is from a village in Sursa police station area of Hardoi district. The victim’s father works in a factory in Sonipat district of Haryana to support the family. On June 17, 2023, Shoaib, a resident of Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, lured his 18-year-old daughter away from Sonipat. The victim’s family searched extensively for the girl but could not find any success.

The gravity of the accusations extends beyond religious conversion, encompassing allegations of physical and psychological abuse. The victim’s father has made shocking claims of his daughter being subjected to forceful consumption of beef and sexual exploitation. Such egregious acts, if proven true, underscore not only religious coercion but also heinous violations of a woman’s autonomy and dignity.

On December 4, 2023, the authorities confirmed the registration of a case in response to these disturbing allegations. The police have assured prompt investigation and necessary actions to ascertain the truth and deliver justice in this matter. Notably, women have been included among the accused, highlighting the complexity and multifaceted nature of this distressing situation.
