The self-proclaimed writer cum Christian activist Shalin Maria Lawrence has openly called for religious conversion “to stop BJP’s growth” in the state. She expressed her fear that atheism will only benefit BJP which will use it as a tool to strengthen its popularity across the state.
Shalin Maria posted on her Facebook page that there are only two methods to stop the growth of BJP in Tamil Nadu. Either “conversion” or “taking Ayodhidasa and Ambedkar to every household” is the key to defeating BJP. She also feared that BJP may use atheism as a weapon. She further added that only “cultural changes” or “restoring history” will defeat BJP’s religious hate campaigns.
Here the biggest irony is that she is calling for religious conversion and at the same time wants to stop BJP’s so-called religious hate campaigns. This is a clear sign that how DMK is shivering since BJP has won more than 300 seats in the local body elections. It has pushed the DMK supporters to the state of a meltdown because their primary campaign slogan was “BJP will intrude the state” if people didn’t vote for DMK.
Uma Anandhan, who is a renowned temple activist, contested on BJP ticket and won from 134th ward in Chennai. This win has disturbed the DMK and Dravidianists who were boasting of keeping the assembly 100% Brahmin free. Shalin Maria also expressed her displeasure about the same in her post.
However, the comment of her supporters are showing something else. They pointed out that religious conversion will only work in favor of BJP like how it did in Kanyakumari. The most number of wards were won by BJP from the district. As fellow Dravidianists themselves criticized her call for conversion she played it up as conversion to Buddhism as advocated by Ambedkar. Yet she deleted the sentence where she advocated for religious conversion after it received backlash from fellow DMK sympathizers.
