Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, claimed to have addressed a letter to his colleagues in other states asking them to incorporate a chapter on Lachit Borphukon in their respective academic curricula.

The letter is one of a number of initiatives the Assam government is launching in connection with the yearlong celebration of the 400th birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom army leader Lachit Borphukon from the 17th century.

The chief minister said he believes that the saga of Borphukon should spread far and wide so that it “instills a sense of pride in every Indian over the valor of the great Ahom general”.

Despite being a bright example of nationalism and love for one’s motherland, Lachit Borphukon’s exploits are still mostly forgotten in many regions of the country, according to the CM in his letter.

The legendary Ahom army general’s biography, according to CM Sarma, would “help to the development of patriotic values in the youth and encourage them to commit themselves to the service of the nation.”

Lachit Borphukan was a commander in the Ahom kingdom, which is now in modern-day Assam. He is renowned for his inspiring leadership, which resulted in the Mughals’ resounding loss in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Despite being in grave condition, Lachit Borphukon led his men to a crushing victory from the front.

The unwavering courage and tenacity of the Ahom general guaranteed that the Northeastern region’s culture, identity, and distinctiveness were preserved.
