Why Delhi Police arrested Ashwini Upadhyay, why #ISupportAshwiniUpadhyay is trending on Social Media

Delhi is again in turmoil and there is a rightful reason for the same. A day after videos of allegedly incendiary slogans being raised at a Jantar Mantar went viral on social media, the Delhi Police has arrested six people for questioning, including former BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay.

This incident has once again raised some serious doubts over the functioning of the Delhi Police, though Delhi Police is claiming that they are handling the matter as per law and any communal disharmony will not be tolerated.”

On August 9, an FIR was booked against unknown people in connection with “raising inciting slogans” at Jantar Mantar. It is mentioned in the FIR that the accused had gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday evening during a march for ‘Colonial Laws & Make Uniform Laws,’ and have raised ‘objectionable slogans’.

Earlier, Delhi Police had confirmed that BJP Leader Ashwini Upadhyay along with Vinod Sharma, Vineet Kranti, and Preet Singh had been detained on Monday night, while two men, both named Deepak, had been detained at the Crime Branch.

What this gathering was all about?

The gathering was organized by Ashwini Upadhyay and called as an initiative under the ‘Bharat Jodo Movement‘ – that had been endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a recent episode of Mann Ki Baat. People were rallying against the British-era laws, the attendees had collected to march in support of the Uniform Civil Code and several other genuine laws.

It is said that few people raised anti-Muslim slogans during this gathering, while Ashwini Upadhyay and other leaders were on stage. However, Upadhyay has said he had no idea that such slogans were raised.

This arrest has provoked the sentiments of people, who were gathered there for initiating a pous movement to get rid of British era laws, which are not fit for any purpose in the modern world. People are anguished with this treatment to Ashwini Upadhyay and his friends and raising voices in support of these people, and currently, #ISupportAshwiniUpadhyay is trending on all social media platforms.

On the other hand Upadhyay is stating that he has no connection with the people who allegedly raised communal slogans and he hinted at a conspiracy by the pseudo-seculars, who might get triggered due to this movement.

‘No permission taken’ says Delhi Police

The DCP of Delhi, Deepak Yadav said, “People who had gathered at Jantar Mantar had no permission. It has come to our due notice that some people raised inciting & objectionable slogans as well. We have also received a video and have registered FIR in the case.”

“We’re carrying out further investigation into the matter. Necessary action will be taken at the earliest.” added the DCP.

However, this logic doesn’t hold any water, as this program was announced many days back and all the arrangements were done in advance. Hence this permission angle doesn’t fit here.

People raising fingers on Delhi Police

People are raising doubts and aspersions over the role of the Delhi Police. People are claiming that Delhi Police is acting dubiously and it acts differently in recent cases where way graver communal statements were made by AAP leaders, JNU students, opposition leaders, and other communal elements, especially during Anti-CAA and Famer agitation, but Delhi Police was failed to take any sort of action at that time, even when there were lots of photographic and documentary proofs were available at their disposal.

However, now Delhi Police has the audacity to say that they are handling the matter as per law and any communal disharmony will not be tolerated. People are asking Delhi police that where were they when Radical Islamic and Khalistani elements were raising anti-Hindu and anti-Indian slogans, torching buses, destroying public property worth several hundred crores, and killed more than 50 innocents in the Delhi riots last year.

Here we have a strong stance that such communal slogans should not be hurled by anyone and anywhere. However, Police should conduct the investigation first and then take stern action like arresting someone. Also, Delhi Police should treat everyone alike, they cant have different parameters for different communities or groups.

Well, here we are in complete support of Ashwini Upadhyay, who is raising a genuine demand of abolishing British era archaic laws, as those laws have no place in modern society. This matter should be investigated transparently and people who have tried to create communal tension should be punished, and that should be the common process for every such incident henceforth.
