The Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, Praveen Darekar, on June 7, claimed that the private hospitals in the state were charging exorbitantly from the Covid-19 patients and demanded to the state government to ask these hospitals to refund their money, else the BJP will launch a state-wide agitation.
Recently, senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said he receives many such complaints on a daily basis against private hospitals in the city and suburbs. He recently wrote a letter in this regard to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta, asking for clarification and correction order to stop exploiting. The BJP leader says that the average bill these days is around Rs 5-10 lakhs and added that private hospitals are inflating Covid-19 treatment cost.
Earlier, the Maharashtra state health department had decided on a price cap for the treatment of Covid-19 at private medical facilities following reports of patients being charged exorbitant fees at private hospitals. Restrictions were also imposed on the billing of medicines at these facilities.
A committee set up and lead by Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope which is now conducting audit and checking the bills of Private Hospitals charged to Covid-19 Patient. In one such check, it was found that there are zero discrepancies in the bills of Dr. Hedgewar Hosptial, Aurangabad. Besides, a large number of Patients, the bill is the lowest.
