Gandhi family is notoriously famous for always acting against the interests of our nation. Continuing this tradition, addressing her rally in Tezpur, Priyanaka Gandhi said if the Congress is voted to power, it will bring in a law that will stop implementation of CAA in Assam.

“When our party comes to power, a law will be enacted to ensure that CAA is not implemented here,” she said.

She is on her two days visit to Assam to carry out Congress’s election campaign. She hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its “silence” on implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra further added that “All over India, the BJP talks of implementing CAA, but why does it become mum on it in Assam?”

She called BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) “threats to Assam’s existence”.

“Union Home Minister Amit Shah has a problem with the unity of the country and unity of Assam. He has spoken about CAA-NRC (National Register of Citizens) across the country. Why does he then become mum on it when he in Assam? Before the elections, the BJP had said NRC won’t be implemented in Assam. What happened to that?” Priyanka Gandhi asked.

Assam witnessed violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and some people reportedly lost their lives in the protests. The protestors saw the law as a threat to their cultural identity and livelihood.

As per the government, the objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who had come to India till December 31, 2014 due to religious persecution in these countries.
