Assam education minister, Hemanta Biswas Sarma made an announcement on shutting down madrasas in the state. The officials of Assam madrasa education Board (MEB) are soon to be served with this official notification. After this announcement, MP badruddin ajmal said that his party would reopen them after coming to power if the saffron party led state government shuts down. MEB chairman Imran Hussain to opposed in a very mushy way stating that out of 706 , 614 madrasas are recognised by the MEB that were constituted in 1934 when India was under British rule.

As per the statement of Mr. Sarma, the government will not encourage any educational institute that runs only on the religious line and that too with the help of the tax payers money in a secular country. If this is the case, then Geeta ,Bible too has to be thought on government funding .The state government spends approximately 4 crores on madrasas annually. Hence all the madrasas will be closed from November and it cannot be provincialized as teaching religion is not the government’s job. The non government madrasas won’t be affected from this decision.

The motive behind this notification is to transform this religious educational institute run by government into a higher secondary and modern education. Over 15 government colleges will be established in the state. This will include 9 colleges only for the girls. Mr. Sarma also stated that all the teachers will be provided the renumeration as it is until the process is completed. This can be termed as a good initiative to modernise the madrasas education. It is also a revolutionary step in politics which can be seen as truly secular & non appeasement approach towards the masses.
