The recent decision by the Allahabad High Court to uphold the National Security Act (NSA) against two individuals involved in the burning of Ramcharitmanas, a revered Hindu text penned by Goswami Tulsidas, has sparked widespread discussions on the boundaries of free speech, religious sensitivity, and respect for cultural heritage.

The incident, wherein the accused openly burnt copies of Ramcharitmanas, stands as a testament to the unfortunate lack of regard for cultural and religious sentiments. Ramcharitmanas holds a paramount position in North India, revered for its portrayal of the epic Ramayana in a simplified form accessible to the masses. Its significance transcends religious boundaries, resonating with millions as a cherished literary and spiritual treasure.

The act of desecrating such a revered text is not merely an affront to religious beliefs but also an attack on the cultural heritage and sentiments of a vast section of society. Goswami Tulsidas’s work has not only been a cornerstone of religious teachings but also a unifying force, bridging communities through its profound teachings and moral principles.

The statements made by certain political leaders, such as SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya and RJD leader and Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekhar Yadav, attempting to discredit or defame Ramcharitmanas in 2023 only added fuel to the fire. These remarks not only lack sensitivity towards religious beliefs but also undermine the profound cultural significance of such literary masterpieces.
