According to media reports, 37 government schools in five blocks of Bihar’s Kishanganj district, which has a sizable Muslim population, have been taking Friday off instead of Sunday.

The state’s main child rights authority, NCPCR, demanded an explanation from the Bihar government on Wednesday after 37 government schools in a Muslim-dominated area observed weekly vacations on Friday rather than Sunday.

NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo questioned Bihar chief secretary Amir Subhani in a letter about who made the decision to proclaim Friday as the weekly holiday instead of Sunday.

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has requested a report on the incident from the Bihar government within 10 days.

In another update, various schools in the state of Jharkhand changed prayers, names & weekly offs to Friday in minority-dominated areas. The State govt ordered these institutions to remove Urdu, Friday weekly offs & a new way of prayer. Around 350 schools have removed Urdu from names and 459 schools reversed to Sunday weekly offs.
