The Bengal Files Trailer Launch Cancelled: Vivek Agnihotri Speaks Out

The Bengal Files, directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, is the third installment in his controversial “Files Trilogy,” following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The film explores the Direct Action Day riots of 1946 and the Noakhali genocide, aiming to shed light on what Agnihotri calls a “dark, hidden chapter” of Indian history.

Trailer Launch Cancellation
The trailer was scheduled to be launched in Kolkata on August 15, 2025, deliberately chosen to coincide with Direct Action Day’s anniversary. Despite having all permissions and written confirmations, the venue—managed by India’s largest cinema chain—cancelled the event at the last minute.

Alleged Reason – The cancellation was allegedly due to mounting political pressure, particularly from West Bengal’s ruling party, TMC. Multiple FIRs had already been filed against the film by TMC members, accusing it of portraying controversial content.

Vivek Agnihotri’s Response
Public Statement – Upon landing in Kolkata, Agnihotri posted a video stating:

“Just landed in Kolkata and learnt that the venue for the trailer launch of The Bengal Files is cancelled. Who wants to suppress our voice? And why? But I can’t be silenced. Because truth can’t be silenced.”

Criticism of Political Interference
He called the cancellation a “sad commentary on our democracy”, questioning: “Is there one Constitution for India and another for Bengal?”

Agnihotri emphasized that the film had already been certified by the censor board, yet was being blocked from public view.

Commitment to Free Speech
Despite the setback, he vowed to launch the trailer in Kolkata on August 16, asserting: “Truth cannot be silenced.” He urged citizens, especially the youth, to support the film and uncover the “bitter truth of India’s hidden history.”

The cancellation of The Bengal Files trailer launch has sparked a debate on freedom of expression, political censorship, and the role of cinema in historical discourse. Vivek Agnihotri’s unwavering stance has turned the film into more than just a cinematic release—it’s now a symbol of resistance against suppression.
